Individual Therapy

Sometimes called psychotherapy, counseling, talk therapy, or treatment, individual therapy is a process in which clients work one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe, caring, and confidential environment. Individual counseling provides a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times in life. Clients will explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviors as they work to identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change. It allows the client to better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change. Individual counseling can help one deal with many personal topics in life such as anger, depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, marriage and relationship challenges, parenting problems, school difficulties, career changes, etc. Individual therapy is appropriate for children, adolescents and adults.

Family Therapy

Is designed to help families with the issues that specifically affect one or more member’s mental health and functioning. It is designed to allow each family member build stronger relationships, improve communication, and manage conflicts within the family system. Family therapy goals can be to improve emotional awareness, adjust to major changes within a family, help members come to accept the things that they cannot change or control and/or improving communication, understanding and empathy.

Couples Therapy

Is focused on helping a couple work through challenges and misunderstandings, understand their relationship better and develop healthier ways of relating to one another. The therapist uses specific therapeutic techniques and interventions to support the couple’s goals. Couples often seek out therapy when they are confronting a specific challenge, such as communication issues, difficulties around sex, affairs, or if they are considering a breakup.

Group Therapy

Usually, people in the group are facing similar issues, like anxiety, depression, and relationship or parenting issues. Clients confront their issues together, to get support and to learn from other group members who are experiencing similar issues.

Lumina Counseling

Types of Therapies

At Lumina, we ensure our centers are staffed by clinicians with a wide-range of clinical orientations (the way they conduct therapy) to meet each of our clients where they are at and provide what they are looking for. Our orientations include (but are not limited to):

Behavioral

Approaches hold the core belief that both effective and ineffective behaviors, thoughts and feelings are learned. A behavioral therapist works to help clients unlearn what has been ineffective in the past and to then develop  new learning strategies to implement in everyday life for a more productive and rewarding life.

Cognitive

Therapy emphasizes what people think rather than what they do. these clinicians hold the core tenant that dysfunctional thinking leads to dysfunctional emotions or behaviors. By helping a client change their thoughts, the client is also then able to change how they feel and what they do. There are two main types of Cognitive therapies:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) explores how a client’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact. A primary focus in CBT is remediating existing problems by identifying the negative or false beliefs that lead to them, and changing out those ingrained thoughts for ones that are more accurate and productive.
  2. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy designed to reduce the emotional extremes a client experiences. DBT helps clients adjust problematic thought patterns and teaches more effective skills to manage distress. By mitigating the inner turmoil caused by intense emotional highs and lows, DBT enables clients to focus on the core mental health issue facing them.

Systems

Systems therapists help conceptualize their client’s within their systems or environment. They strive to develop a system that works for all members by considering the expectations, needs, desires, and behaviors of each person within that system. When issues arise, these are attributed to breakdowns in systemic interactions rather than deficiency of one person. In family systems therapy, family relationships, patterns, communication, and behaviors are explored, allowing the therapist and family members to observe how certain behaviors could be impacting the family. Once these behaviors are recognized and understood, family members can learn new behaviors that have benefits for themselves and the rest of their family.
